John-Waite-Photo-1John Waite is in the midst of his first Australian tour, and by all reports the shows thus far have been electrifying. At 65, and after 40 years in the music biz, Australian fans have often scratched their heads as to why Waite has never toured Australia before. Although The Babys disbanded in 1981, they did have huge chart success in Australia, with ‘Isn’t It Time’ reaching number one in 1977 and ‘Every Time I Think Of You’ hitting the top 10 a year later. Waite released a slew of great solo albums in the 1980s, including 1984’s massive ‘No Brakes’ LP, which resulted in international attention and produced a number one US hit, the enduring “Missing You”. 1985’s ‘Mask Of Smiles’ was a favourite of ours, as it included Johnny Thunders’ slashing guitar on the hard rocking tune, ‘No Brakes’. ‘Rovers Return’ from 1987 is another of his great solo albums worth seeking out. As is commonly known, in 1988, Waite teamed up with former Baby’s bandmates Jonathan Cain and Ricky Phillips, along with Neal Schon from Journey and drummer Deen Castronovo, to form the supergroup Bad English who released the enduring, ‘When I See You Smile’, another number one and the album itself selling over two million in the US alone. Bad English had other great tunes from three album, including ‘Forget Me Not’ and ‘Straight To Your Heart’. In the 90’s Waite was part of Ringo Starr’s All Star Band and has continued to produce quality solo albums and tour worldwide. This is one tour you do not want to miss!
