The amazingly talented and under appreciated Hoad Brothers - Cliff and Jeff Hoad

We here at Rockbrat were big fans of Kings Of The Sun. If you were around in the late 80’s, you may remember their two amazing albums, their self titled effort from 88 and the follow up, ‘Full Frontal Attack’. The fact that they were from Australia made it even better. This band were as good as, if not better than, anything that came out of LA (or anywhere else for that matter) during that period, and that they didn’t go on to be as big as G ‘N’ R or Aerosmith remains an anomaly. Great original riffs, memorable songs, an amazing front man who was cooler than cool, and a truly kick ass drummer. Mr. Rockbrat had the ‘Bottom Of My Heart’ 7” when it came out, and as a KI$$ fan was wise to Kings as they had supported Noo York’s finest across Europe in 87.  I saw the band on several occasions, but one gig stands out clearer than others. This was in 1990, and the venue was the Caringbah Inn. Screaming Jets had the support and Kings Of The Sun were headlining. The ‘Full Frontal Attack’ album was out and to my ears, was a seriously rockin’ album (Steven Tyler dug it remember). Before the band came on, the entire crowd was staring transfixed at the video screen watching a video by LA’s lamer than lame Warrant, ‘Cherry Pie’. Cute girl, thin sounding band. Shows you just how dumb people can be. They are about to see a band who were a ZILLION times better than Warrant, yet they are transfixed by Warrant. Well, I got it at least – even if they didn’t. Kings were hot that night, with Glen Morris back in the fold after his sabbatical to the Screaming Tribesmen. By 1993, with Kurt and Eddie now flavour of the month, it seems that Kings were on the way out. They released an album in 1993 for Mushroom Records called’ Resurrection’ which in my opinion was simply stunning, full tilt rock n roll – but it fell on deaf ears. The Hoad Brothers Jeff and Cliff have continued to make killer rock n roll since that time, and are still at it. Check out their web site, where you can listen to and buy some of their more recent albums. Start with their ‘Stand Back’ album, AMAZING! Yet get ‘em all, they are all Rockbrat approved!
